"1-to-1" is an educational technology term that has reached cliche status. 1-to-1, or 1:1, has several interpretations. 1:1 is not a magic solution to mastery of curriculum. 1:1 does not guarantee a more quality education and it doesn't (necessarily) help students learn more or better. 1:1 is about supplying students with digital tools that create an environment that encourages student ownership of learning, authentic audience and collaboration. Think of the old television show MacGyver. MacGyver was able to solve every problem that was thrown his way. All he needed was a Swiss Army Knife. A 1:1 devices is just that; its a students curricular Swiss Army Knife. Of course if you ever watch MacGyver, you will understand that his Swiss Army Knife is just a tool. His education is what made him such a great problem-solver. It is the same idea with 1:1. Technology supplies the tool, teachers supply the learning, and students use the two to problem-solve.
Here is what 1-to-1 means to Independence Local Schools:
Our 1:1 program is about using a blended learning methodology to empower student ownership of learning.
Our 1:1 program is about using a blended learning methodology to empower student ownership of learning.
What is Blended Learning?Blended Learning is simply the idea that we are going to use traditional (brick & mortar) learning AND digital methodologies to help connect students with content.

What is Student Ownership?Student ownership is the idea that students have the ability to control, in some way, the Pace, Place, and Path of their learning. Technology allows teachers to post work that students can access asynchronously. It also allows students to create and curate their work.

Authentic AudienceDigital publishing allows students an authentic audience to review their work. As students use more digital tools and began to create knowledge, not just learn things; our students will collaborate more with the "real world". The department of technology will work hard to make sure teachers, students, and parents understand the risks and rewards associated with publishing digital content.
